2017 Sept NEOOC Scout Orienteering Event, Camp Manatoc
Five scouts and three adults from the troop participated in a scout orienteering event put on by the North Eastern Ohio Orienteering Club (NEOOC). We formed groups of 2-3 scouts (with adults to shadow) and each group completed 3 different orienteering cross-country courses during the day. For dinner we ate pizza at a local pizza shop in Akron (lots of cheese!). After sunset we put on our headlamps (and glow sticks) and completed the night orienteering score course in the dark.
2017 Sept MAPS Campout
Scouts spent the day at the MAPS Air Museum (Military Aviation Preservation Society),where the boys camped in a near by field to the museum. The scouts(and adults) were showed many of the aircraft and even shown inside some of them they also took a series of "classes" throughout the day, they learned about aerodynamics, how to fly an airplane and learned about some of the history of aviation. All classes were taught by war veterans, and at the end some of the veterans gave speeches. It was a great experience and I think all the scouts enjoyed it as well.
2017 Sept High Adventure Canoe Campout, Mohician River
A group of older scouts and adults traveled to Loudonville Ohio for a 2 day (40mile) canoe trip down the Mohician river. The trip began at the Loudonville Canoe Livery where we loaded our equipment onto the canoes for the 2 day journey. The first day we canoed (5hr) through a familiar part of the river we have done on previous troop campouts. We arrived at the campsite in Greer; the scouts gathered fire wood from the river and the adults relaxed in camp. The next day we canoed (6hr) toward Walhonding where the Mohician and Kokosing rivers meet. This part of the river widens out and is much more private than the previous day. We had 3 sightings of a large bald eagle that flew above the river and over our canoes. The journey was exciting, the food was good and weather was clear and dry; A great weekend for being in nature.
2017 April Backpacking Campout, Raccoon Creek State Park PA
A group of older scouts and adults traveled to Raccoon Creek State Park in PA for a overnight backpacking trip. Sat morning we arrived at the park and started our 8mi loop from the the ranger station, around the lake and back to the ranger station. The morning hike was great: cool temps, low humidity, clear trail. We ate lunch overlooking the lake and it started to rain. We then hiked back to the ranger station; 2 hours in a downpour that turned the trails to muddy streams. At the ranger station we were cold and wet; but the sun came out, we wrung out our socks and dried out in the sun's rays. Everyone was tired because the 8mi hike really ended up being 11mi (Lesson #1: maps are flat and trails have hills!). We were re-energized by the sun and prepared for the 4mi hike to the shelter. The scouts were so excited that they jumped in a ditch and caught a mouse in a bottle. We hiked through the muddy horse trails to the shelter (6mi actual hike, again maps are flat ...) and made dinner. We relaxed that evening and turned in early. We stayed at Pioneer campsite and the shelters were very nice, elevated, clean and dry (no mice, at least not in the adult shelters). On Sun we made breakfast, packed up and started on the hike back to the ranger station. The morning was cool but quickly warmed up as the sun came out. The trails were still muddy in spots but we stayed off the really muddy horse trails (Lesson #2: stay off horse trails after rain). We stopped by the mineral springs and found a small waterfall and water gushing out of holes in a sandstone rock face. We jumped back in the cars, ate lunch in Lisbon OH and headed back to the scout hall. Although we were soaked during the rainstorm and all had muddy boots, it was a great overnight experience. On this campout we learned how to persevere through the rain, regroup and push through to enjoy all that nature has to offer scouting.
2016 Gold Rush
Scouts spent the day out on the trails where they brought all the gear they may have needed. The only form of transportation was by pushing a sled where they needed to go. They earned gold nuggets which can be used to purchase items in an auction. The scouts were able to get a igloo cooler full of chips.
2015 September Orienteering Campout, Camp Manatoc
Troop35 (4 scouts and 2 adult leaders) participated in the 2015 NEOOC Orienteering Scout Championship at Camp Manatoc. The event featured 2 days of orienteering courses to test your skill and endurance. The first day we learned the orienteering basics and specifics about finding controls using rough orienteering techniques. We used these skills and completed 2 orienteering courses during the day. At night we took part in a night-o which is a short score-based orienteering course run at night with our headlamps to light the way. The second day we reviewed the best practices for finding controls, split into teams and completed the final orienteering course of the weekend. The courses were long, the hills were steep (and some of the controls were hidden); but we had a great time running through the woods, being in nature, and improving our orienteering skills.
2014 February Campout, Camp Butler
When we got to camp butler it was about 8 o'clock. we got our tents set up and cooked our snack.(our snack was beef stew. kind of. but not from a can). We then went to bed. When we woke up the next morning, we started cooking breakfast, which was eggs, meat, and veggies in a tortilla. Then we did a search and rescue hike, where all the adults had some sort of issue and "injury". After that we sat around for a while and cooked grilled cheese for lunch, and then we went sledding! After we were done sledding we went to church. When we got back from church we ate dinner which was chicken and cake. the cake didn’t turn out but that was alright. We all went to bed on a full stomach that night. In the morning, we cooked breakfast which was pancakes. After breakfast we took our tents down, packed up and left for home.
2013 Thanksgiving Campout, Quail Hollow State Park
November Camp out at Quail Hollow State Park - "Thanksgiving in the Woods"
The Dragon Patrol ate pop tarts Friday night after putting up the pavilion and their tents. We helped to create a fire, which we stayed up late watching until it was just a bed of coals. On Saturday morning we made eggs and sausage. It was delicious. After that we did a service project for Quail Hollow by raking their leaves near the manor house. For lunch we had hot dogs grilled over the fire along with a side of coney sauce, also cooked on the fire.
After that we cut up logs for firewood and went to mass. We held a mass in the woods, which was very cool. For dinner we cooked spaghetti. The adults also gave us a homemade pumpkin pie to eat. That was amazing tasting. We went to bed early because we were very tired that night. In the morning we ate donuts that we cooked.they were pretty good. We then packed up and left for the scout hall to put our gear away and head home.
2013 June Super Trip, Niagara Falls NY
On Friday we left and in about four hours we were in Camp Stonehaven. We set up our tents, made camper pies, and went to sleep. On Saturday we went to Niagara Falls. We went to the cave of the winds, on Maid of the Mist, saw an IMAX movie, and went to the aquarium. On Sunday we went to Old Fort Niagara and took a tour of the fort then went back to camp. Later that day we went on a hike on the Niagara Gorge trail. The next day we had breakfast, went to see the Buffalo Naval Shipyard, toured the ships, and left for home.
